The Horizons show is doing so well that I needed to bring in some new work for Final Friday. If you missed it last month, hope to see you there tomorrow.

What I lack in a university-education-based ability to define and deconstruct art, I hope I make up partly with experience. The experience for Horizons comes largely from sitting on a tractor when I was much younger. It was there the seeds were planted for an appreciation of big sky and horizons. It took a while, but the seeds grew.
Horizon, is at Watermark Books in Wichita. Reception on Final Friday, August 27, 2010, 6-9pm. The show continues through September 20. Watermark Books is located on the southwest corner of Douglas and Oliver.

Watermark, Red Chairs, and Arts Partners. (Day 855)
![]() |
| "Ghost Red Chair" (detail) |
I have just finished a painting that will be donated to the Orpheum Theatre's "Red Chair Affair" benefit. "Red Ghost Chair" is a 30x66" acrylic on canvas (larger image here,) and is based on the Louis Ghost Armchair, designed by Philippe Starck and manufactured by Kartell.
School is back in session, and I will be in the classroom this year, as I am now a participating artist with Arts Partners. I developed a two-session residency that has students using readily-available materials to build simple turntables that mimic some of the work I do in the studio. Besides actually making art, the students will get exposure to elements of balance (visual and physical), geometry, electricity, and basic physics.
(And remember, I'd love to have you sign up for my emailing list here.)

Thanks everyone. (Day 869)
I had a great time visiting with everyone who came out to the Horizon Final Friday reception thrown by the fine folks at Watermark Books. The weather may have been a bit of a precursor to the following Monday's record of 107°, but the crowds did not stay away, lured by KMUW's free Freddy's Frozen Custard in the parking lot, I think.
And holy cow, artwork actually sold. I am so impressed and humbled, I may have to take back some of those things I've said about Wichita in the past.
Thanks again, everyone, for a great evening (and a special thank you to Justin Shiney at Shiney Independent in Lawrence for T-shirt printing.)
Horizon, at Watermark Books in Wichita, continues through September 20, including another Final Friday reception on August 27, 2010. Watermark Books is located on the southwest corner of Douglas and Oliver.

Do. (Day 874)
Oh seriously, people. What have you been putting off for the last week or 10 years? Let me tell you - don't wait until you get cancer or something to get motivated.
I am in the final stage of pulling together the Horizon show at Watermark Books, which means my focus is pretty tight. Nonetheless, with paintings done and only small details to hammer through, I can let my mind wander a bit. The daydreams that rise to the top often have to do with time, age, and how best to use each day. I will totally lecture you; find that passion and pursue it. It sounds trite or clichéd, I know. But if you are at least in your mid-20's, you probably have a sense of what the passion could be. This weighs heavily on me, and it is part of what drives the art I make.
Yes, just get off your dead ass and do something. OK, that is all!

A Beer Break Before the Lockdown. (Day 876)
Beer and brats is about art, if it's a break before I go to final artshow lockdown. So that's what we did today: Linkhaüs. I am a sucker for graphics that don't suck, and $5 pitchers of Tallgrass Oasis.
I want a building just like that for a studio. Someday.
Wednesday I hang the show at Watermark Books; see you on Final Friday from 6-9pm.
